It finally got here.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, fun fact: mailing what is effectively an open container of gear oil half-way around world is a great way to piss off a whole bunch of mail handlers. And opening the packaging is a great way to end up smelling like gear oil for the rest of your life...

Kinja'd!!!

But this thing is so much smaller than it looks when it’s in the Niva. Seriously, it’s tiny. Quart of royal purple for scale.

It’s a Lada five-speed, some variant went into just about every longitudinal engine configuration. Fairly certain it’s 90% identical to a ‘60's Fiat four-speed.

Going into my ‘96 Niva.

It’s a licensed clone of the Fiat 5 speed they used in the later Spider. If the Russians didn’t improve the design, it’ll have fragile synchros.

No. You are wrong. Quit correcting facts with assumptions. “Fairly certain” was about the percentage that’s identical.

It’s the 124 sedan’s 4-speed. Originally used in the Vaz-2101. AvtoVaz tossed a fifth gear onto the reverse shaft in the mid-eighties, but it was done more for the sake of having five gears than anything else, and doesn’t lubricate properly unless you overfill it and you’re going fast enough to accidentally splash some oil up there. As to fragile synchros, they’re brass, so like any older transmission it’s fine so long as you use a yellow-metal safe gear oil. But most aren’t and most people don’t know enough to tell the difference.

I stand corrected. It can’t be any worse than the actual Fiat 5 speed, though. I speak from experience on that one.
